Poor road conditions in Niagara complicated traffic conditions for motorists yesterday morning, the result of freezing rain and inclement winter weather.

Niagara Regional Police and a detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police had to respond to a number of collisions across the city, Niagara Falls Review reported.

Twenty-two (22) motor vehicle collisions were reported to the NRP between 4am and 11:30am, four of which were considered minor, with the motorists referred to the collision reporting center. The remaining 18 required police response, Sgt. Rich Gadreau of the NRP said.

Highway 58 at St. David’s Road was at a standstill after three automobiles spun out of control driving over black ice.

Alex Pedersen, a spokesperson for CAA, told Niagara Falls Review that CAA Niagara received more than 100 calls for service yesterday.

Police are urging motorists to be aware of road conditions before hitting the road.

A water break also caused traffic complications at the corner of Thorold Stone Road and Dorchester Road Sunday evening. The area was closed that evening for crews to repair the break; the area remained closed yesterday.

Environment Canada yesterday warned residents of the risk of further poor travel conditions on Tuesday. As the temperature climbs to 3°C, the freezing rain is expected to change into regular rain. Rain is also forecast for Wednesday.
