Manulife appoints former BDO executive as its president and CEO

Newcomer will take one of the company’s foremost positions

Manulife Financial Corporation announced yesterday that it has appointed Richard Payette as President and CEO of Manulife Quebec.

As president and CEO of the company’s Quebec operations, Payette “will be responsible for leading the development, implementation and execution of the Quebec strategy to advance Manulife’s position and support the company’s mission and vision in Quebec,” a release said.

Payette will also be counted as a member of Manulife’s Canadian Division Executive Management Team and Global Leadership Team. He will report to Manulife Canada President and CEO Marianne Harrison.

“Manulife has a substantial business in Quebec and Richard’s strong business and community relationships will help further increase Manulife’s presence, visibility and impact in the province,” Harrison said. “Richard will provide strategic direction to support the growth of all Manulife’s business lines in Quebec, and will represent the Company in the community and the industry for Manulife in Quebec.”

According to a release, Payette has over 30 years of experience in business management, transformation, leadership and mergers and acquisitions. He has held a number of senior leadership roles at accounting, tax and advisory firm BDO from 2010 to 2015. He was most recently a CEO for BDO International, Americas Region, and was a former member of BDO International’s Global Leadership team.

Prior to his stint with BDO, Payette was president and CEO of audit, tax and advisory firm Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton.

He has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Écoles des Hautes Etudes Commerciales de Montreal and is a Fellow and member of the Order of Chartered Professional Accountants of Quebec. He is also a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants.
