The Canadian government issued a Public Weather Warning Wednesday morning for powerful winter winds and affecting much of Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island and many Maritime communities.

By Wednesday afternoon, the majority of warnings were for potential snow storms hitting Quebec from the Gulf of St. Lawrence and southern Ontario from Lake Huron.

Storm season is picking up and Atlantic Canada tends to feel the first squalls of the year.

Greg Hull, vice president of sales at A.A. Murno Insurance, explained how his clients were affected from his Antigonish, Nova Scotia office.

“We’re getting hit by heavy winds and of course strong rain conditions,” Hull said. “We’ve got a little bit of an increase (in claims) but nothing too drastic with the heavy winds.”

Hull said he advised his clients to clear all unsecured objects from their property as well as checking the stability and health of trees beside their home in order to mitigate wind damage.

“You can have all the best intentions, but if Mother Nature sets her mind to doing something sometimes it’s hard to battle her,” Hull said.

Hull also pointed out a big snowfall was expected to come his way on Friday

The most significant spike in claims Hull has seen in recent months came back in October with flooding in Cape Breton.
