The adoption of eSlips as electronic proof of auto insurance, replacing the usual pink paper slips, has been recommended in a legal advisory report released by the Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO) this week.

Currently, pink slips are used in Alberta, Ontario, the Maritimes, Nunavut, Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories. But according to the CSIO, some of the benefits of using eSlips include substantial monetary savings on printing and mailing insurance documents and keeping abreast of the technologically-oriented lifestyle of consumers.

By updating legislation, consumers can store and display eSlips on their mobile devices instead of a physical copy.

Fasken Martineau LLP was commissioned to make the report, which was titled, ‘eSlips: E-Delivery of Motor Vehicle Insurance Liability Cards’. The report provides information regarding legislation requiring pink slips and case studies from areas that use eSlips. It also identifies opportunities and issues affecting legislative change in Canada.

Catherine Smola, president and CEO of CSIO said that customers’ evolving preference for paperless solutions has left government regulations behind the times.

“eSlips are a natural extension of CSIO’s eDocs and eDelivery solutions, and will enable the broker channel to overcome a significant obstacle in adopting technologies that reduce costs and improve the customer experience,” Smola said.
