Manulife-Sinochem, the joint venture company between Manulife (International) Limited and Sinochem Finance Co., Ltd., has announced the Chinese launch of a consumer program that rewards customers with free insurance coverage for “taking steps to stay healthy and active.”

Called MOVE, the program helps promote health and wellness among consumers. It is part of Manulife’s strategy to change consumers’ perspectives on life insurance. Similar other programs have been implemented in Hong Kong, the Philippines, and the United States. Canada’s version of the program will debut this autumn, a company release revealed.

The launch of MOVE was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was in China for his first official visit.

“We think it’s time to use the power of technology to empower and reward our customers in China for living a healthier lifestyle,” Manulife Asia president and CEO Roy Gori said during the event. “Leveraging the huge success we’ve had with ManulifeMOVE in Hong Kong, Macau and the Philippines, we’re excited to be bringing this revolutionary life insurance experience to our customers in mainland China, and create more engaging relationships with them.”

Chinese customers who participate in the MOVE program will receive a fitness tracker, allowing them to measure their fitness progress as they go. Once they achieve pre-set goals, as per the program, participating consumers will have the opportunity to receive free insurance of up to 200,000 RMB (about CAD 39,000).

“At Manulife-Sinochem, we put our customers at the center of everything we do,” said Manulife-Sinochem president and CEO Kai Zhang. “Customers have told us that they need help to maintain an active lifestyle so they can have a longer, healthier future with their families. We hope we can encourage everyone to lead healthier lives with MOVE. Small steps today can really make a big difference in the future - that’s what MOVE is all about.”
