Six Port Moody children have set up a page on crowdfunding website GoFundMe on Friday, seeking funding for the rebuilding of their fire-ravaged home.

The fire occurred on July 10, reported CBC News. Five children, aged four to 18, managed to escape the conflagration, while a sixth was not at home when the disaster happened. Their mother was not as fortunate, however, and perished in the fire.

"We are seeking help to rebuild our house and our lives," the eldest child wrote on the GoFundMe page. "We are currently homeless because our house is uninhabitable and unsalvageable."

The family’s insurer refused to pay for a claim, arguing that the policyholder—the children’s father—was accused of arson.

The father of the six was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of arson. His identity, as well as further details on the case, was not disclosed due to a publication ban protecting the identities of the children.

"We have deep connection to our house and our neighbours, and we hope to raise enough funds to rebuild the house back to habitable condition," said Bryan Cheung, a family friend.

Cheung pointed out that not only does the house suffer from damage from the fire, but water damage as well due to firefighting efforts.

The GoFundMe page is asking at least $250,000 to pay for repairs. According to an entry on the page, if the house cannot be fixed, it would cost about $600,000 to rebuild.

The campaign has already received a number of donations.

"The support which we have received from our friends, neighbours, relatives, and community has been a ray of light in the midst of confusion, darkness and despair," the eldest child said in a post. "We are greatly appreciative of everything and we are very hopeful of our future."
