Just one simple tip could help your clients keep their car – and prevent your carrier making unnecessary claim payments

Many car thieves look for the easy opportunity. That means the more tempting a target a driver makes his car, the more likely a thief is to make off with the vehicle.

All that means that a little prevention can go a long way toward cutting down on auto theft – and the resulting insurance claims payment.

Insurance Bureau of Canada statistics show that 60% of cars are stolen with their keys in them, according to a Driving.ca report. “Don’t leave your keys in the ignition” may sound like obvious advice, but those statistics cover more than just keys left in the ignition – keys in any easily locatable spot invite thieves.

“Your car is worth far more to thieves if the key is intact,” wrote Lorraine Sommerfield for Driving.ca. “…Modern immobilizer technology makes that key fob far more important than any key ever was.”

But it’s not just keys left in the car that can be invitations to auto thieves. In the last few years, police have started warning people not to leave their keys near their front door, Driving.ca reported. People are likely to leave their keys on a table or hung from a hook just inside the front door – and many thieves know this.

So one simple tip – keep your keys in a spot where thieves won’t have easy access – may help your customers keep their cars … and prevent your carriers from making hefty claims payments.
