Far Out Friday: ‘Even Lamborghinis need insurance!’

Drivers have learned the hard way that if they’re going to shell out thousands for a Lamborghini, Porsche or Bentley, they’d better make sure it’s properly insured

While it may seem as if a monthly premium would be an afterthought for drivers with enough disposable income to own a Lamborghini, Porsche or Bentley, one insurer has discovered that thousands of these luxury car owners feel as if auto insurance is no longer a necessity.

After obtaining police data through Freedom of Information requests, Churchill Car Insurance in the UK reported that authorities have seized 27,688 cars so far this year, according to The Guardian. Moreover, the seized cars include Ferraris, Lamborghinis, 10 Bentleys and 40 Porsches – cars, one hopes, the owners have the cash to insure.

But while it may be easy to cast judgment on these uber-rich owners, the merely rich driving BMWs are even more willing to flout the law. Some 1,767 BMWs have already been seized in 2015 for the same reason.

Experts at Churchill Insurance warn that these numbers reveal a pervasive insurance gap in the UK, particularly since 70,430 cars were captured last year as well.

“This analysis exposes just the tip of the uninsured iceberg. Thousands upon thousands of motorists across the country are driving without insurance, which is truly terrifying,” Steve Barrett, head of car insurance, told The Guardian.

To their credit, Cambridge police recently did an exceptional job getting that message out to UK motorists. Earlier this month, officers were forced to tow a lime green Lamborghini Huracan worth more than $360,000 because the “supercar” was found to be uninsured.

In a social media post that went viral, they posted a picture of it on a flatbed with the caption “Even Lamborghinis need insurance!.”
