According to a statement by the
Insurance Bureau of Canada, the severe storms the struck southern Alberta in late June caused approximately $50 million in insured damage.
The storms kicked up lightning, hail, and heavy rain.
CBC News reported that two Calgary homes were set on fire by lightning strikes on June 28. In the same city, downpours caused the streets to flood. Okotoks was subjected to heavy hailfall in the same period, while 100 km/h winds and a small tornado developed near Ponoka.
"Storms like this bring the message home that we are seeing more extreme weather events and resulting damage to property," remarked IBC Western and Pacific vice-president Bill Adams.
Much of the damage caused by the storms was focused in Alberta,
CBC News observed, but insurance claims were also being filed in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
