One broker saw the visitor list increase from two to three when one young couple visiting the boat show gave birth to a baby girl.

It all happened near the New Boater Welcome Centre, when on opening weekend Heather Junkin went into labour and was taken away by ambulance, giving birth to Rachelle Joy Junkin.

Proud papa Colin Junkin took the good news to social media, thanking the Boat Show for the speedy assistance.

“This was a nice story from the show,” says Andrew Robertson, president of Skippers’ Plan Boat Insurance, and vice president of the marine department of CG&B Group. Although he never got a chance to speak to the new parents, he was on hand that Saturday when all the excitement started.

Skippers’ Plan shared the event on their Facebook page and via Twitter, adding that “Both Mom and baby are doing well! We suspect we’ll be seeing #boatshowbaby in January 2016!”

Robertson is carrying on a tradition of providing boating insurance that started with his grandfather  W.J. Robertson back in 1943.

“It was my grandfather who built a boat in his driveway and was frustrated that he couldn’t find the proper insurance,” says Robertson. “He was a broker himself at the time, largely insuring farm vehicles. Frustrated, he created a program on his own, and it all started from there.”

It was that program that gave birth to the Skippers’ Plan. Later on in 1971, Robertson’s son Bruce joined the insurance agency – then becoming a three generation family business in 1992 when Bruce’s son Andrew joined the brokerage. In 2010, Skippers Plan became part of the CG&B Group, and has been an exclusive provider of insurance services for the Canadian Yachting Association since 2011.

The Toronto International Boat Show continues all this week.
