Two insurance companies made it into the winners list of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures of 2015, awarded this week by recruitment specialist Waterstone Human Capital.

Cowan Insurance Group, a pre-eminent Canadian owned and operated brokerage and consulting firm, made the cut in the Mid-Market (revenues over C$50m to C$500m) category, while Manulife stormed the charts in the Enterprise (revenues above C$500m) category.

The performance of these organizations, in terms of a three-year average revenue growth, has significantly outpaced the S&P/TSX 60 by over 300%, or three times, Waterstone said.

Marty Parker, president and CEO of Waterstone, said the award recognizes the importance of great workplaces where culture drives performance. “Culture is the one thing that distinguishes an organization, and in the broader public sector, with its multiple bottom lines and a necessity to forge results in ambiguity, a strong culture is essential for strong performance.”

Parker drew attention to Cowan’s impressive Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, in that its foundation has raised C$20m in community-related donations.

Heather McLachlin, president of Cowan Insurance Group, said: “We’ve created an impressive culture characterized by an “anything is possible” attitude, where our leaders are actively engaged with their employees, and encourage taking initiative—with the goal of delivering exceptional value to our clients.”
