A fire in Bathurst, NB last November badly damaged the popular local restaurant Au Gourmet Café, destroying several paintings made by local artists. However, the police suspect that a painting worth C$10,000 was not damaged but in fact, stolen.

The painting, which shows a man reading a newspaper in a café, is understood to have survived the fire, but went missing after, according to the police. The other surviving artworks were stored at a nearby candy shop, but it is unclear if that was where the painting was stolen from.

The fire also damaged the Bathurst office of the Canadian Red Cross, a pet shop and several residences. There were no injuries reported, but several people have lost their jobs and have been displaced from their homes.

According to Canadian MGA April, this incident highlights the need for small business owners to have comprehensive insurance for their establishments. Fire isn’t the only disaster that can strike the business and sometimes, misfortune comes in numbers, which is why hospitality insurance plans, which are tailor-made for the businesses specific needs, are available.
