Specialty insurance giant appoints new Canadian chief

XL Catlin, one of Canada’s largest specialty insurers, has appointed Ian Rutherford as head of its Canadian Property Business

One of Canada’s largest speciality insurance companies has a new chief at the helm for national operations. Ian Rutherford has been appointed to head of XL Catlin’s Canadian Property business. A 30-year veteran, he is moving into the role following the management of XL Catlin’s property underwriting operations in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.

“Given Ian’s decades of experience in the Canadian P&C marketplace, plus his familiarity with XL Catlin’s expanded capacity and underwriting capabilities, there is no one better suited to continue building out and growing our Canadian operation,” stated Michele Sansone, head of XL North America Property unit. “In his new role, Ian will help our clients in Canada design the right property insurance protection for their industrial and commercial properties, while making sure they take full advantage of our property risk engineering expertise to help them prevent property losses.” 

Added Canadian Country Manager Nick Greggains,“From mining to manufacturing, from forestry to retail, many Canadian businesses manage some very large complex property risks.  Ian’s cross-industry experience and underwriting skill, especially for high risk properties, will prove valuable in their efforts.”

Rutherford, who has been with XL Catlin Canada since 2010,previously spent more than 20 years at GCAN Insurance Company, formerly Gerling Canada Insurance Company, including serving as vice president and regional manager for GCAN’s British Columbia regional operation.

In Canada, XL Catlin’s property insurance coverage is available on a licensed basis through XL Specialty Insurance Company – Canadian branch.
